What is Decentralized Science (DeSci)?

DeSci is in its most nascent stages within the crypto industry, where it lies in the efforts within the scientific community to change how research is funded and knowledge is shared while shifting ownership and value from industry intermediaries.

While aiming to create an ecosystem of open collaborations between scientists, building on the premise that scientific knowledge should be accessible to all.

DeSci creates a more decentralized and distributed research model, making it more resistant to censorship and control to central authorities.

It started in 2021 when the first Open Science NFT sold for 13 ETH.

DeSci flourishes on four key pillars:

• Smart Contracts: a disruption to the publishing industry→ smart contracts now mediate directly between authors and peer reviewers.
• Blockchain-Based Funding Models: NFTs and token launches are being used to fund research
• Incentivized Communities: Through new funding models, communities can be financially incentivized to engage in open-source data compilation.
• Censorship Resistant: Open source data can be stored in longevity and cannot be suppressed by any government or third party.
